Antifreeze Proteins
Philippians 4:9 says, “My God shall supply ALL your needs according to His riches…” But does God really understand our needs? How about our desires?
When animals experience severe cold, one of the helps God has given some is the ability to flood their blood with trillions of glucose sugar molecules from the liver. The Wood Frog of Northern USA freezes solid. Its heart stops beating and its lungs stop breathing for six months! In this crazy time, this super-flooding with glucose keeps ice crystals from forming in its cells and puncturing them with razor-sharp points.
Other animals, plants and insects have another means of surviving super-cold. It’s done with anti-freeze proteins–afp’s made by the cell’s nuclei. We’ve learned that water forms sixteen different molecular crystals. These proteins attach themselves to specific types of dangerous ice crystals and hinder their growth. Imagine that! Specialty ice-sticking proteins!
Let these proteins remind you to take courage. God knows all your needs–and hopes– far better than even you do–even as He intimately knew the needs of His little frog and met them.
God knows knows the very best ways to meet you. He’s looking at the best things over the long term. Be encouraged. Just as He could not overlook His little frog, He cannot forget you. He will yet make a huge difference.
