GLOW WORMS: Glow worms are found in Queensland, Australia.  There are beautiful twelve-inch strands of light in the cave with little sticky little blobs on them.  What is the purpose of the “strands of light?  To catch food.

JELLIES AND SIPHONOPHORES:  Jellyfish and Siphonophores are different names for the same creatures.

JELLIES AND SIPHONOPHORES:  Jellyfish come in an amazing array of shapes and sizes. Many are bioluminescent.  Some glow all the time with a steady light and others have lights all over their bodies that flash like a disco ball.

JELLIES AND SIPHONOPHORES:  There are incredibly weird creatures called siphonophores.  Siphonophores almost always live in the shallow ocean.  What makes them so weird is that they are not one creature but thousands of creatures living together in a colony.

JELLIES AND SIPHONOPHORES:  Siphonophores live in colonies to make it easy for themselves to protect each other from predators and to make it easy for them to hunt food.

JELLIES AND SIPHONOPHORES:  If siphonophores are put under too much stress, the colonies will fall apart and all of them will grow new siphonophores.

JELLIES AND SIPHONOPHORES:  The most well known siphonophore is the Portuguese man-of-War.  This creature is  beautiful, but it is toxic.

JELLIES AND SIPHONOPHORES:  Siphonophores–like jelliyfish–come in many bioluminescent varieties.  Some look like Christmas lights on strings.  Others look like glowing tinsel, snakes and beads.

JELLIES AND SIPHONOPHORES:  Siphonophores do not light up when colliding with something like zooplankton do. Instead they give off electric shocks to anything close to them. 

JELLIES AND SIPHONOPHORES:  One siphonophores  looks like a feather boa.  The tips of the stalks glow red. This is only the third creature discovered to glow red after the dragonfish and the red teensee fly.
